Cemetery of World War I prisoners of war (Dunajská Streda)

Between September 1914 and November 1918 there was an Imperial POW camp in Dunajská Streda, which held mainly Russian prisoners of war. In Réni, part of Malé Blahovo, a POW camp of Italian officers was set up.

Immediately after the arrival of the POWs, already on 18 September 1914, the first cases of cholera were registered. Fortunately the epidemic did not get beyond the boundaries of the camp, where several hundred POWs died of cholera and dysentery in just a short period of time. At the old cemetery in Malé Blahovo, a military cemetery was established, where the POWs themselves erected a small Greek Catholic chapel.

According to historical records from 1914 to 1918, 965 POWs were buried at the military cemetery. After the POWs laid down their arms in 1918, the management of the cemetery, which is still maintained, was transferred to military authorities and then to local authorities and scouts, or the town was responsible for its upkeep.

Despite historical legacy, but also due to a lack of interest, the cemetery deteriorated, and by the end of the 20th century it was a neglected and undignified final resting place for soldiers. However, in 2014, the town of Dunajská Streda's historic preservation group Csallóköz-Szerdahelyi Kaszinó 1860 and inhabitants managed to restore the site to status as a dignified memorial.  On 11 November 2014, to mark the end of World War I, the ceremony was ceremoniously handed over administration by the towns of Dunajská Streda and Malé Blahovo.

In order to ensure its preservation, it is only accessible to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. The bridge has been featured on a 29 Slovak crown postage stamp, which was issued by the Slovak Postal Service in 2007.
